What are the key requirements for a synthetic turf pitch base?
When a pitch is tested to meet the relevant governing body standards, there are four essential criteria it must fulfill. From the ground up: the pitch must be properly drained, stable, compacted, and have an even surface at the top.
Drainage is crucial because local conditions can impact how water is removed or contained under the pitch. In the UK, drainage is typically vertical, using a stone raft that stores water before releasing it into the external drainage system. Often, external experts are consulted to design the attenuation system for proper water management.
The construction method may vary depending on the contractor or consultant’s preference, as well as local ground conditions. However, the base should be compacted and firm enough to walk on. Generally, a pitch is designed with a slight slope to assist water flow and ensure the surface appears level. The base should be smooth, without dips or bumps.

How is pitch construction tested?
Testing methods depend on who is building the pitch and the type of contract in place. It’s recommended that clients have someone oversee the construction to ensure the agreed-upon specifications are followed. This could be a person with surveying or engineering experience, or a specialist consultant.
